Culver City has quickly become a bustling section of Los Angeles with so many new apartment buildings, businesses, and restaurants opening up. But before the neighborhood became one of the most active parts of the city, Destroyer had already laid down its roots. The restaurant opened in 2016 when Culver City introduced a new dining experience. It’s located in the Hayden Tract district, an area known for its uniquely designed industrial buildings and handful of art studios and startup offices. There’s a lot of creativity in the neighborhood and Destroyer fits in well.
Destroyer was founded by Chef Jordan Kahn (who previously worked at Alinea, French Laundry and Per Se) and is the sister restaurant of Vespertine, a 2 Michelin Star Restaurant, which is right across the street. Chef Kahn is known for his creative cooking creations and showcases this at Destroyer, but in a much more casual way than Vespertine, which could be a very pricey meal.
Destroyer is more of an everyday cafe where workers and locals nearby can enjoy a quick meal or cup of coffee. When it first opened, the restaurant was only open on weekdays for breakfast and lunch, making it a popular choice for the work crowd. But it eventually expanded to weekend hours, which made it most possible for people who don’t work in the area to enjoy. My boyfriend and I came to dine on a Sunday afternoon.
The hip eatery fits in with the artsy surroundings, having a very aesthetically pleasing design, from its minimalist decor to its ceramic plates. The menu was projected on the wall near the register where you ordered before finding a seat. While waiting for the food, you can browse the jars of jams, ceramics, and other little knick knacks also for sale.
There was a decent amount of people there for Sunday lunch, but we only had to wait in line for 10 minutes to order. There were a number of small tables outside the restaurant, making it a great choice for a meal on a sunny day. We didn’t have to wait long for a table to clear up.
When it came to the food, Destroyer puts a lot of TLC into the presentation. It almost felt like we were eating at a high-end restaurant but without the high-end prices. I ordered the sourdough sunchoke waffle with creamed kale, pepper jelly, country ham, and fried organic egg. The waffle was nice and fluffy. I’ve never had sunchoke before (it’s a root vegetable), but the way Destroyer prepared it made it taste like a usual waffle. The kale, egg, and ham were high quality and were perfect compliments for this breakfast dish. My boyfriend got the slow-roasted pork belly sandwich served on a baguette with pickled chiles and arugula. He was extremely impressed with the bread, as it had a crunchy texture yet was not overly chewy. The bread was so impressive that he even gave his compliments to the staff. The pork belly was savory the chiles gave the sandwich a little spicy kick. We would come back to Destroyer and get this sandwich again.
After our meal, we took a walk to check out the cool architecture in the area. Destroyer is a great place to start a weekend, or if you work in the area, a great choice for lunch. It’s an elevated dining experience that doesn’t hurt the wallet, which is appreciated!
